How to use the stakeholder map generator

  1. 01

    List the people

Add each contact with a role, their power and interest from 1 to 5, and their stance towards you.

  2. 02

    Read the grid

People land in four quadrants: manage closely, keep satisfied, keep informed and monitor.

  3. 03

    Close the gaps

Use the coverage checks and the suggested touchpoints to decide who needs attention this quarter.

What is a stakeholder map?

A stakeholder map is a visual list of the people who can affect or are affected by a client relationship, plotted by their power to influence decisions and their interest in your work. For key accounts it shows who to manage closely, who to keep informed and where coverage is thin.

How the power/interest grid works

The grid sorts stakeholders on two questions: how much power does this person have over the outcome (budget, veto, sponsorship), and how interested are they in what you deliver?

High power and high interest means manage closely. High power and lower interest means keep satisfied. Lower power and high interest means keep informed. Lower on both means monitor. The point is not the label. It is deciding how often and how deeply you talk to each person.

Stakeholder mapping for key account management

Large B2B accounts rarely hang on one person. The sponsor who signed the contract may not be the person who uses the work every day, and the person who can cancel it may be someone you have never met.

A good map shows single-threaded risk (only one contact with real power), missing champions (nobody senior who actively supports you) and blockers (people with power and a negative stance). Those three gaps explain many surprise losses at renewal.

Why stance matters as much as power

Two people with the same power can need very different plans. A champion needs equipping with evidence to sell internally. A blocker needs understanding first, and a plan to address their concern. This generator lets you set a stance for each person so the engagement plan reflects it.

How often to update a stakeholder map

Review it every quarter and whenever something changes: a new sponsor, a reorganisation, a budget cycle or a missed commitment. A map that is not kept current gives false comfort.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a stakeholder map and stakeholder analysis?

Stakeholder analysis is the thinking: who the people are, what they want and what they can influence. The stakeholder map is the visual result, usually a power/interest grid. This tool does both: you enter the analysis and it draws the map.

How many stakeholders should a key account have mapped?

Most B2B accounts need between five and twelve people: the sponsor, budget holder, day-to-day users, a technical or procurement contact and anyone who can block a renewal. If you can only name one or two, that is itself a finding.

What does single-threaded mean?

A relationship is single-threaded when only one person on the client side has real contact with you or real influence over the account. If that person leaves, changes role or loses interest, the account is at risk.

How do I score power and interest?

Power: 1 means no influence over the outcome, 5 means they can approve, veto or cancel. Interest: 1 means they rarely think about your work, 5 means it affects their goals every week. Use your best judgment and revisit it.

Is the stakeholder map generator free, and is my data saved?

It is free and needs no account. Everything runs in your browser. Your stakeholder list is not stored or sent anywhere, so copy or export it before you leave the page.
